The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), in collaboration with the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) will be holding the first ever public auction for Dorper sheep in the country here on August 8.
Known as ECER Pekan Dorper Auction, the event will take place from 10 am until 1 pm this Sunday at the Agropolitan Pekan project site in Runchang, Pekan.
Open to the public, especially to interested farmers and prospective farmers, the auction will involve 500 Dorper sheep, branded as “Pekan Dorper”, which were raised under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) Agropolitan Pekan project for the hardcore poor.
“We would like to take this opportunity to invite all interested bidders to take part in this auction which is the first of its kind for Dorper sheep in Malaysia,” said Chief Executive Officer of the East Coast Economic Region Development Council, Dato’ Jebasingam Issace John.
Bids to buy the sheep will start from RM300 onwards. To take part, each bidder needs to register and pay a registration fee of RM10. The auctioner will open the auction at the basic price for each sheep category, whereby the bidders can raise the bid in a multiplication of RM50.
The Dorper sheep, which was first introduced in South Africa, was developed by crossing the Dorset Horn and Blackhead Persian breeds. Touted as one of the most fertile of the sheep breeds with potential lambing intervals of only eight months, Dorper sheep are well-adapted to a variety of climatic and conditions.
