Project	Rearing Goats Under Intensive System

Description

This project is similar to Initiative 7 and also involves the use of Boer and Jamnapari breeds as rams with local Katjang ewes. RISDA, with the support of the Kelantan DVS, can lead the development of breeder goats in Machang using existing technologies.

One of the regional RISDA breeding centres is located in Machang, Kelantan, where the cross-bred animals are reared in goat houses and managed commercially for 6 months before distribution to participating smallholders. The proposed initiative is located in the same district and will allow for expansion of the RISDA breeding project. The project involves a total area of 60 ha of public grazing land and will act as a nucleus and catalyst for the goat industry to develop in the vast rubber-growing region of Machang.

Project Rationale

The project is aimed at providing a supplementary income to rubber smallholders especially at the replanting stage. In this project, each smallholder is given 30 head of goats with a buyback scheme by RISDA. Income is generated based on the market price of animals at RM400 to RM600 per head. Success is dependent on a good selection of participants so that they possess the necessary skills and interest.
