Strategies

Environmental strategies are aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Region's many valuable natural resources, rising awareness of their importance and repairing some of the environmental damage that has already taken place.

There are two primary strategies for environmental protection. They are:

  • The natural resources in East Coast Economic Region (ECER) shall be conserved and utilized wisely for the benefit of present and future generations

  • The economic activities in East Coast Economic Region (ECER) shall be undertaken in a manner that ensures the sustainability of the natural environment

Amongst the steps proposed under sustainable development to protect the environment:

  • Expanding the network of protected areas – for conservation of the biological, physical, hydrological resources and related ecological systems, while allowing for research and limited eco-tourism activities

  • Maintaining the Integrity of Coastal and Island Ecosystems – The protection and maintenance of coastal and island ecosystems are crucial to the viability of the tourism industry in the ECER. The various development guidelines and controls in place, to reduce tourism the negative impact on the environment and ecosystems of main resort islands such as Pulau Redang and Tioman.

  • Strict monitoring of highland development - Poor agriculture practices have caused soil erosion and in turn lead to the siltation of rivers. The cultivation on steep slopes, the need to clear the adjacent areas for maximum sunlight for their crops; and the use of plastic sheets has contributed to the environmental degradation of the hill stations.

  • To embark on new solutions – to constantly review the environmental managment of the projects in order to counter threats to ecosystems. An integrated river basin management system will be put in place and continuous efforts to reduce flood hazards in flood-prone areas and coastal erosion with the use of structural and non-structural measures will be continued.

Environmental conservation and protection will not only focus on protection of natural wildlife and forests, but to provide an all-encompassing environmental protection in all aspects of developments of the ECER.
