The three East Coast States and the District of Mersing each has its own distinctive defining quality and at the same time they are united by many common characteristics. These features will determine the unique developmental approach necessary to capitalise on its existing economic activities, resource base and inherent strengths.

Terengganu

State Positioning:
Tourism & Education

  • Tourism
    Terengganu will position itself as the dynamic Tourism Gateway to the ECER. It offers diverse and unique tourism attractions in areas of mainland coastal and sustainable island tourism, ecotourism, urban tourism, and its distinctive cultural and heritage tourism. Development of the new Kuala Terengganu City Centre (KTCC) will strengthen the image of Kuala Terengganu as a vibrant Heritage Waterfront City.

  • Oil, Gas & Petrochemical
    Endowed with rich reserves of oil and gas, Terengganu is a well known as the leading oil, gas & petrochemical industry hub in the region and promises excellent market access to the Asian region and the global market. A new Kertih Plastics Park with strong support infrastructure and services has been planned within the petrochemical zone in Kertih.

  • Manufacturing
    Terengganu is known for its fine craftsmanship in woodworks, handicraft (songket and batik) and boat making. Naturally, it will focus on enhancing handicraft production along with traditional and modern boat making. A heavy industries zone will be concentrated in Telok Kalong.

  • Agriculture
    In the agro-based activities, Terengganu is geared to be the Goat Breeding & Research Centre (Kuala Berang), development of the Citrus Valley (Durian Mentangau), and the kenaf plantation in Setiu, as well as aquaculture activities in Lake Kenyir.

  • Education
    As a regional centre for educational excellence and preferred study destination, the state has a concentration of reputable tertiary institutions such as Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Darul Iman (UDM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Dungun, each possessing a strong research and development base. In addition, Taman Ilmu (Knowledge Park) will be established in Besut to promote learning, creativity and heritage appreciation.

  • Infrastructure & Transport
    The establishment of Kuala Terengganu as the International Airport for the region is an added advantage. To improve land transport network, Phase II of the East Coast Expressway to connect Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan is being implemented. On the islands of Redang, Perhentian and Kapas, the setup of waste management systems will ensure clean and sustainable environment.

  • Environment
    Three new state parks, Terengganu Hills, Setiu Wetlands and Kenyir State Park will be developed to protect and conserve the biodiversity and ecology. Plans are being made to upgrade Terengganu Global Marine Turtle Observatory (TGMTO) in Rantau Abang.
