role in tourism as they involve the hosting and specific
focusing of successful events to attract an international
audience to the ECER.
The revenues brought about by these hallmark events create a strong multiplier effect. It generates employment opportunities and improves the business climate in local communities.
The region has, and will play host to some of the most exciting hallmark events which includes :-
Monsoon
Cup
Organised by the Terengganu State Government, The Monsoon
Cup celebrates its inauguration and debut as the 50th official
event of the Swedish Match Tour, and serves as the Malaysian
leg for the prestigious international sailing event. Attracting
the rich, famous, influential corporate and individuals,
the event spruces up Kuala Terengganu’s image into
the world map. Dubbed ‘The Formula One of Sailing’,
this professional sailing series was formed in 2000 to unite
the world’s best match-race regattas under one banner.
Sultan's Endurance Challenge
Promoting sports tourism in Terengganu, the Sultan's Cup Terengganu Endurance Challenge 2007 makes another mark in Malaysian history. With trails up to 160km, the ride consist of shore front, wooded areas, water crossing, village settlements, flat logistic road & tarmac. The riders and their horses are expected from Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Qatar, UAE, USA and Malaysia.
Terengganu International Islands Boat Race
Pulau Duyong has gained worldwide fame for its boat building industry and recently it hosted the international boat race event under the Swedish Match Tour. This is among the several events held in conjunction with the Monsoon Cup to showcase Terengganu's rich art heritage.
Kota Bharu International Cultural Fest
It is an annual traditional performing arts competition with various cultural and traditional games such as Dikir Barat, Rebana (Giant Drum), Coconut Percussion, Gasing (Top Spinning) and silat (Art of Self Defense).
Nenggiri-Stong International Extreme Sports Competition
Nenggiri River has many beautiful rapids which can be commercialized
as a wonderful location for ecotourism. The competition
is established to revive white water rafting competition
in the state and complemented by other extreme sports.
Red
Bull Air Race World Series (www.redbullairrace.com)
This is a potential event for the ECER. The Red Bull Air
Race World Series, established in 2003 and created by RedBull,
is an international series of air races in which competitors
have to navigate a challenging obstacle course in the sky
in the fastest possible time.
IGFA
World Angling Championship (www.igfa.org)
Another angling competition, to attract anglers all over
the world to experience the sport fishing here in the country.
The Rompin Royal Billfish Competition, part of the series,
(RPBIC) is an annual off-shore fishing competition. For
the past three years it has been held in seas off Kuala
Rompin, Pahang, Every year, the Pahang State Government
promotes the state through this event. It attracts participants
from Singapore, Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, Zimbabwe,
France, Sweden, South Korea and the United States.
Mersing Eco-Challenge
This strenuous expedition race is a multi-day adventure race competed in teams of four from all over the world. It is similar in concept to the Eco Challenge created by Mark Burnett. The event is to take advantage of the uniqueness of Mersing as a gateway to the islands and the Endau Rompin National Park.
