Culture & Heritage
As
a cradle of Malay culture, steeped in rich cultural heritage,
the region acts as a living museum where ancient customs and
crafts are perpetuated and practiced side-by-side with modern
ways to create a distinctive way of life. The region’s
traditional architecture of timber buildings with sloping
rooflines and carved lintels has inspired contemporary structures
embracing the same spirit.
The depth of culture distinguishes
this region as a place where tourists can enjoy the ‘East
Coast tourist experience’, through food, cultural performing
arts, historical architectures, handicrafts such as batik,
songket, Tenun Pahang, wood carvings, silverware and brassware.
Cultural heritage tourism
could be a catalyst for preserving and revitalising ECER’s
cultural heritage. This will enhance the attractiveness the
Region as a prime tourist destination by promoting authentic
Malay culture as it’s unique selling proposition.
While the Government has
played an important role in preserving cultural art in the
Region, especially handicraft making, plans are in the development
to adapt traditional handicrafts for tourist and export markets.
The Government has
established a number of handicraft centres in Kota Bharu,
Kuala Terengganu and Pekan to preserve living crafts such
as batik making, songket, tenun weaving and wood carving,
and creating a steady supply of quality handicraft products
for the retail market.
