Island

The ECER is home to some of the most beautiful islands and coral reefs in Malaysia. The island destinations have attracted a steady stream of tourists over the years, prompting the future development direction to ensure preservation and protection of islands while major tourist accommodation will be located on the mainland.

Island tourism involves cluster development in prime mainland coastal resource areas, including sea and land activities, marine sports, hotels/accommodation, entertainment, and retail, with a wide range of tourism services.

The islands are promoted as 'Playground Destinations' while focusing development on mainland coastal areas.

Action plans to protect the marine environment will include:

  • Ensuring that the scale of tourism is within island carrying capacity and developments will not results in negative aspects such as sediment discharge arising from clearing of vegetation which eventually affects the corals and other natural features of the island.

  • Jetties, medical facilities, solid waste treatment and sewerage will be improved and upgraded, resulting in efficient and smooth operations

  • To develop sustainability indicators for monitoring purposes and sustainability accreditation. This is another effort to ensure that developments are tracked and recorded so that the fragile ecosystem of the island can be preserved and protected.
