Project Integrated Water Transport study & implementation
Location Coastal gateway towns & all ECER islands

Description

Access to the islands via sea transport will be from the identified gateway towns :

  • Kuala Besut (Perhentian)
  • Merang (Redang)
  • Marang (Kapas)
  • Dungun (Tenggol)
  • Tg. Gemok (Tioman)
  • Mersing (Tioman and Mersing group of islands)
The project initiatives identified above include upgrading of passenger jetties and also improvement of local amenities and facilities for passengers.

In addition to infrastructure improvements at the identified jetty, improved access to these gateway towns through road network developments will also be necessary to package and market these ports within the tourism strategy for the Region.

Project Rationale

A study is recommended to review water transport services between the mainland and the ECER islands. Such a study should include:

  • Review of existing services
  • Demand analysis
  • Routing review
  • Ferry operational plan
  • Review of investments (new boats/ferries)
  • Role of operators/regulators/authority.
The study focus will be on coastal gateway towns, the Terengganu islands as well as the Mersing group of islands.
