TEMERLOH, PAHANG- 12 APRIL 2014: empower ECER Temerloh today honored 137 top performing students who scored five or more A’s in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations held last year.
Known as “Juara empower ECER”, the high achievers received Certificates of Achievement from the Guest of Honor, YB Dato’ Haji Mohd Sharkah bin Haji Shamsudin, the Pahang State Executive Committee Member for Tourism and Culture who is also the State Assemblyman for Lanching, at the Dewan Mat Kilau, SK Tanjung Lalang in Temerloh. In 2013, a total of 400empower ECERparticipants sat for the UPSR, PMR and SPM examinations.
In his statement, East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) Chief Executive Officer said, “The event today shows the inclusiveness of empower ECER, with participants selected from national and vernacular schools. One of the criteria in selecting the participants is, they must be academically challenged and come from low-income families.
“In 2012, we honored 120 Juara empower ECER in Temerloh who scored 5 A’s and above out of 400 students and today, we have among us 137 students. This is an improvement of 4% from 2012. We believe empower ECER’s winning formula is the holistic approach of focusing on academic content alongside personal development.”
In his statement, ECERDC Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Jebasingam Issace John said, “We have a unique formula of bringing out the best in our participants. To create a more level playing field, empower ECER focuses on exposing the participants to a variety of learning experiences, that combines training, guidance and motivational sessions.”
In the 2013 UPSR examinations, SK (T) Mentakab topped the list of Juara empower ECER, by producing 39 out of the 87 top performers, followed by SJK (C) Mentakab (25 students), SK Tanjung Lalang (17 students), SK Bandar Mentakab (5 students) and SK Lanching (4 students).
In the 2013 PMR and SPM examinations, SMK Mentakab produced the most number of high achievers, 13 out of 22 for the PMR examination and 23 out of 28 for the SPM examination. The other schools are: SMK Lanchang (4 for PMR, 1 for SPM), SMK Seberang Temerloh (5 for PMR, 4 for SPM).
empower ECER is the flagship human capital development program of the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC). The program was launched in Bentong in 2010, and introduced to Temerloh in 2011. Each year, it prepares 400 students for the UPSR, PMR and SPM examinations in Temerloh. To date, a total of 1,600 students have attended empower ECER remedial and motivational classes in Temerloh, which aspires to become the educational hub of Pahang.
empower ECER is a unique programme that combines remedial classes with confidence building. To create a more level playing field, empower ECER focuses on exposing the participants to a variety of learning experiences.
Overall, empower ECER has a record of delivering 100% passes among students. The program is conducted in 17 locations; nine locations in Pahang, namely Bentong, Temerloh, Raub, Lipis, Cameron Highlands, Jerantut, Maran, Rompin and Kuala Pahang; three locations in Kelantan, namely, Jeli, Bachok and Ketereh; four locations in Terengganu, namely, Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu and Besut; and in the ECER district of Mersing, Johor.
In 2014, empower ECER’s Academic Training programme conducted in Pahang has the participation of 5,257 students sitting for three national examinations. This consists of 1,924 participants sitting for the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR),1,752 participants for Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) and 1,581 participants for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
empower ECER is a twin-pronged human capital development initiative launched by ECERDC in 2010 to help reduce economic disparities between rural and urban communities. It consists of the Academic Training programme and Skills and Entrepreneurship Programme. The latter focuses on vocational training for single mothers, jobless youths and disadvantaged individuals.

To date, the program has benefitted 34,113 participants across ECER, comprising 22,938 students and 11,175 adults. For adult participants, it is estimated that up to 80% of participants will gain employment after completing their courses or have sufficient knowledge and practical experience to start their own business, and the ability to generate income of between RM500 and RM1,500 per month, or even more.
