PAHANG, 12 DECEMBER 2024 – The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has delivered another significant achievement with the completion of the 29.8-kilometre Kemaman-Gebeng Water Distribution Pipeline. This infrastructure project ensures a steady and reliable supply of treated water from Kemaman to the Gebeng industrial area, addressing long-standing water security challenges and laying the foundation for sustained industrial growth in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER).
This milestone reflects a successful collaboration between ECERDC, Pengurusan Air Pahang Berhad (PAIP), and Syarikat Air Terengganu (SATU), with Terengganu playing a key role in supporting Pahang’s water needs. Beyond addressing industrial demands, the pipeline symbolises strong economic ties between the two states, fostering regional development through resource-sharing and strategic partnerships.
Today, the Launch and Handover Ceremony of the Water Distribution Pipeline Project from Kemaman, Terengganu, to Gebeng, Pahang was officiated by YAB Dato’ Sri Diraja Haji Wan Rosdy bin Wan Ismail, Menteri Besar of Pahang, and YAB Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Menteri Besar of Terengganu. The project highlights the commitment to share infrastructures for industrial and community needs.
In his speech, YBhg. Dato’ Baidzawi Che Mat, ECERDC Chief Executive Officer said, “It is with great pleasure to welcome all of you to this gathering as we are handing over one of the most critical enablers of economic progress in the ECER, which is a stable and sustainable water supply”.
By delivering an additional 90 million litres of treated water daily from Kemaman, Terengganu, to Gebeng, Pahang, the pipeline addresses water supply requirements in Gebeng. This critical infrastructure ensures a stable supply to meet the projected increase in clean water demand, which is expected to reach 466 million litres per day by 2025, compared to the current supply of 290 million litres per day.
“I would like to emphasise how this vital resource strengthens our industrial ecosystem, particularly in the Gebeng Industrial Area and Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP), and how it serves as a cornerstone for attracting new investments while supporting our existing investors”,
“With the region’s well-established infrastructure, strategic location, and supportive policies, coupled with a dependable water supply, these areas are primed to meet the needs of even the most resource-intensive industries”, added YBhg. Dato’ Baidzawi.
With the completion of the Kemaman-Gebeng Water Distribution Pipeline, Gebeng is now better equipped to capitalise on its strategic location and connectivity to key infrastructure in the East Coast Region, including Kuantan Port, the East Coast Expressway, and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL). These connections further enhance Gebeng’s competitiveness as a hub for high-value, export-driven industries while supporting the continued growth of existing businesses.
This project is a testament to ECERDC’s broader efforts, in collaboration with the states in the East Coast Region, to create an investment-ready environment that aligns with Malaysia’s economic aspirations. By delivering sustainable infrastructure and strategic projects, the region is strengthening its foundation for long-term growth while positioning itself as a key driver of the nation’s development.
