PM To Kick Off ECER Initiatives

KOTA BAHARU, Oct 24 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will roll out the East Coast Economic Region
(ECER) masterplan in Kuala Terengganu and Kota Baharu on Monday
and in Kuantan the next day.
He will be joined by the Menteris Besar of Terengganu, Kelantan,
Pahang and Johor at all the launch venues, according to a Petronas
statement today.
The ECER initiative is designed to raise incomes for nearly four million
people, representing 15 percent of the country’s total population,
create 560,000 new jobs and attract some RM112 billion worth of
investments over the next 12 years.
Linked to the prime minister’s stated aim of eradicating poverty and
building human capital, the ECER encompasses Terengganu, Kelantan,
Pahang and Mersing district in Johor, which make up about 51 percent
of Peninsular Malaysia’s total land mass.
The “people-centric” ECER masterplan crafted by Petronas involves
227 projects in transportation, infrastructure, tourism, education,
manufacturing, the oil and gas sector and agriculture.
The plan will address the development imbalance between the East
and West coasts of Peninsular Malaysia as well the income disparities
between urban and rural areas within the region, the statement said.
“ECER also aims to generate economic growth with increased value
chain, pave the way for better access to knowledge and innovation for
the people, overcome the continued socio-economic imbalance, raise
the standard and quality of living, strengthen existing institutions and
build the capacities of the local people,” it said.
The Kuala Terengganu launch will take place from 9am on Oct 29 at
Padang Awam, Batu Burok, while the Kota Baharu launch will be at
3pm at Padang Kompleks Sekolah-Sekolah Wakaf Mek Zainab here.
In Kuantan, the ceremony will commence at 9am on Oct 30 at Padang
Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan 2.
At all the three launch venues, a three-day exhibition will also be held
to help create and enhance public awareness on the ECER and its key
projects and initiatives.
